WP3 - Clinical Data Extraction
There is an emerging demand, largely unmet, for the integration and exploitation of heterogeneous biomedical information to improve clinical practice, medical
research and personalized healthcare.
TASK 3.1 DATA INTEGRATION
Integrating medical/clinical data is made difficult from the fact that in the management of such data each sector has distinct data governance policies and database
management rules. While basic biological research data sources are open, clinical data sources are kept private with rigorous data access controls, due to the privacy
health data regulations. Furthermore, the majority of clinical data sources are hosted by proprietary commercial software.
TASK 3.2 DATA UPDATING
Whenever data sources are updated, portions of integrated database becomes outdated; thus the extraction phases need to be re-executed to refresh contents. This is
true also for data deletions and data insertions. Such strategies can be adaptive with respect to the amount of changes in data: if the cost of the updating procedure is
too high and/or the changes are not too relevant, then data updating could be delayed.
TASK 3.3 DATA EXCHANGE
The term “health information exchange” denotes the technology used by various health organizations or hospitals for sending important health information among
specific systems or communities is known as. Safety in data exchange is important, and recent results produced by the database community help finding appropriate
solutions.
